Toe-tapping to the Tune of Discipleship: Jesus' Greatest Hits!

Howdy!  I am coming to you with a fresh perspective on what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. And let's be honest: while following Jesus is serious business, who says we can't sprinkle in a little humor and wisdom from some heavy hitters of the faith?
Disciple Defined
The word "disciple" might sound like something you'd hear in a history class, especially if you're knee-deep in American History. (Side note: Did you know George Washington prayed daily? He was kind of a big deal.) But the term is pretty simple. A disciple is a follower or student. In the context of our Savior, Jesus Christ, it means to be fully committed to Him and His teachings.

"The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us." - C.S. Lewis.
How to Jam Out as Jesus’ Disciple
Know the Lyrics: Understanding the Gospel is the first step. Remember John 8:31? Jesus said, “So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in My word, then you are truly My disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” (LSB)
  1. Heartbeat Synced with His: It’s all about being transformed from the inside out. As Romans 12:2 reminds us, don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed. It's like turning from a caterpillar into a butterfly, but way cooler.
  2. Practice, Practice, Practice: Because even the guitar gods had to start somewhere. Discipleship involves growth, which means getting more Christ-like daily.

"Grace is the very opposite of merit... Grace is not only undeserved favor, but it is favor, shown to the one who has deserved the very opposite." - Charles H. Spurgeon.
Common Misconceptions
  1. Instant Perfection: Just because you've decided to follow Jesus doesn't mean you're suddenly a spiritual superhero. The journey is ongoing.
  2. Solo Performance: While a solo can be impressive, Jesus’ plan involves community. Just as He sent out His disciples two-by-two, we’re not meant to go it alone.

"There is no pit so deep, that God's love is not deeper still." - Corrie ten Boom (I know she's not on the list, but dang, that quote's a zinger!)
Challenges of Discipleship
Living in a world that often seems at odds with a Biblical worldview, there are challenges aplenty. But, spoiler alert: Jesus has overcome the world! Though, it might be tougher than eating Grandma's overcooked pot roast on Sundays.

"Trials teach us what we are; they dig up the soil and let us see what we are made of." - Charles H. Spurgeon (Again, because Spurgeon's basically the OG of quote-worthy statements.)
Perks of Being in the Band
  1. Unconditional Love: Remember, God's love isn't a limited-time offer.
  2. Guidance: With the Holy Spirit and the Bible, it's like having GPS for your soul, except with fewer rerouting notifications.
  3. Eternal Perspective: This world isn't all there is. There's hope beyond our current jam session.

"Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don't really matter." - Francis Schaefer.
Conclusion
To be a disciple of Jesus is the greatest gig ever. It’s about heart transformation, walking in rhythm with Jesus, and growing in grace. It doesn't require a flawless record, just a heart tuned to His grace.

"The nature of Christ's salvation is woefully misrepresented by the present-day evangelist. He announces a Saviour from Hell rather than a Saviour from sin. And that is why so many are fatally deceived, for there are multitudes who wish to escape the Lake of Fire who have no desire to be delivered from their carnality and worldliness." - Arthur Pink  (Okay, okay, I snuck another one in. Can't help it!)

So, grab your spiritual guitar, get in tune, and let’s rock out for Jesus!

Until next time, keep strumming those heartstrings for the Lord! Cheers, Chris Reighley

P.S. Always remember, "A dog barks when his master is attacked. I would be a coward if I saw that God's truth is attacked and yet would remain silent." - John Calvin Because why not end on a humorous note?
