Counsel in the Heart: Draw It Out

Chapter: Proverbs 14 | Verse: Proverbs 20:5

Some people carry deep wisdom—but never share it. Others have questions stirring inside—but never voice them. In both cases, the treasure stays buried. Solomon says wisdom isn’t just about having counsel—it’s about drawing it out.

“Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water, But a man of discernment will draw it out.” — Proverbs 20:5, LSB

We live in a world drowning in opinions but starving for wisdom. Proverbs 14 reminds us that true discernment sees beneath the surface. But Proverbs 20:5 gives us the skillset to access it: learn to draw out counsel.

That might mean listening more than speaking. Asking better questions. Giving space for quiet people to share what God has shown them.

It also means slowing down long enough to draw out what’s buried in your own heart. You may have God-given counsel already inside you—Scripture you’ve memorized, lessons you’ve learned—but you’ve never stopped to ask for it to rise.

Wisdom often waits in deep water. Discernment knows how to bring it to the surface.

Who around you might be carrying wisdom you haven’t tapped into?

  • Ask a wise friend a deep question—and listen well.
  • Journal your own heart’s counsel.
  • Pray: “Lord, help me draw out the truth—not just skim the surface.”

Walking with God means living with discernment—not just reacting to life, but reflecting on it. We’re learning to ask better questions and wait for deeper answers. Subscribe now and draw closer to truth.

Closing Prayer

Lord, give me the discernment to draw out wisdom—from others, from Your Word, and from the deep places of my own heart.
